The Phoenix 29 rises from the success of its predecessor to be the next evolution in downhill speed and performance. Working alongside the Factory Race Team, our engineers started with a blank sheet of paper in order to build the downhill rig of their dreams. Everything needed to change – chassis, geometry, suspension design, and of course, wheel size. The team wanted an ultra-fast, low slung speed machine that’s ready to blaze down the gnarliest of World Cup tracks. It also needed to be capable of sending it big on countless bike park laps. Well, we have good news – you don’t have to dream. The Phoenix 29 is real. And it’s really fast."

From the wide-open ski slopes of Les Gets to the treacherously steep roots and rocks of Val di Sole, the Phoenix 29 let our Factory Race Team push their personal limits like nothing else. That’s because from day one our race team was highly involved with the Phoenix 29 design. Working closely with our engineering team, the racers provide direct feedback after testing prototypes in the best way possible: World Cup racing. Initial goals of keeping the ride feel as similar to the 27.5 version they loved so much were quickly superseded with advancing a bike that is even better. The Phoenix 29 is quite simply the fastest, most capable World Cup DH bike on the planet.

Without a doubt, 29er wheels roll faster, smooth out rough courses and carry a ridiculous amount of momentum. They offer improved tracking and braking in turns too. Short 17” (44.3mm) chainstays add ‘playful’, ‘flickable’ and ‘manuals for days’ to its repertoire. This makes it incredibly fun in a bike park, and extremely quick in tight, technical wooded sections. Whether it’s your job to win races at the highest level or you want to session the bike park with friends, the Phoenix 29 is insanely fun and always fast.

To ensure the best sizing, we recommend that you visit your local Pivot dealer to get a professional fit and refer to our geometry chart to check your measurements. We suggest that you pick your Phoenix based on your riding style. The Phoenix 29 features long and low geometry, and all sizes have the same head tube length and a very narrow range of seat tube length. This means that riders should pick their frame sizing based on top tube length and reach measurements.  Below is a general guideline: 

Small: 5'4.5" – 5’9” 

Medium: 5'7” –5’11” 

Large: 5'10” – 6’3” 

X‐Large: 6'1” +

The Phoenix was originally tested and optimized to run a FOX DHX2 Coil or Float X2 air shock.  You can run just about any 250mm X 70mm stroke shock on the market in coil or air with the proper tune. We’ve spec’d the FOX Factory Float X2 on the Phoenix 29 as we have the most testing on this (and the DHX2 coil-over) shocks.  The Float X2 air shock was chosen as it was proven consistently faster in testing with the Pivot Factory Race Team. This is what the team races on and therefore what we choose to spec (why wouldn't we?).  If you want to go as fast as the best racers in the world, this is the best set up we have found.  If you just love that plush, ground-hugging feel of a coil-over on your DH bike, the DHX2 is tested, proven and also an excellent choice.   

There are other high-quality shocks in the market. However, as we cannot test every shock on the market, riders assume some risk if they choose a shock that does not fit properly or is not tuned correctly for the bike.

For the front of the shock, the hardware is 8mm x 22mm. Some shocks may have a different spec then the Fox shock that comes on the bike and may not fit properly. 

The Phoenix can run any 29” specific dual crown DH fork with travel ranging from 190mm to 203mm. 


Zero stack (ZS) 49.6mm top and ZS 56mm bottom.  Pivot also offers a +/-.75 degree headset for both Phoenix DH models that allows the rider to further tune the geometry for a specific course or feel.  

Super Boost Plus 157 uses the existing chainline developed for DH bikes but uses standard trailbike BB widths and crank combinations to take 29” DH bike performance to the next level. Super Boost Plus 157 is a highly optimized combination of existing standards and technologies with a totally ridiculous (but highly descriptive) name. The Super Boost Plus 157 idea has enabled us to build the Phoenix 29 with a level of performance previously unattainable with any other 29” DH bike in the market.

* Better Cornering clearance and increased pedaling efficiency.  Super Boost Plus 157 allows you to use the same width cranks that you would use on your enduro or trail bike.  Narrower crank arms are more efficient when pedaling, offer better pedal clearance when corning, and provide more side to side clearance when navigating tight rock gardens.  You can still run traditional wider Q factor DH cranks with spacers but you won't want to after experiencing the performance gains of the complete system on the Phoenix 29.  The Phoenix complete builds feature either a Race Face SIXC Carbon DH crank on our Team Saint build or a Race Face Atlas crank on our Race Zee build.  

* Increased wheel stiffness: The Super Boost Plus specific hubs on all our Phoenix 29 builds increase the hub flange width and provide for more even (better) spoke tension and the results are incredible. On a DT Swiss 29er alloy wheel with a 25mm inner width rim, the Super Boost Plus wheel is 46% stiffer than the same wheel built with a 142mm hub and 30% stiffer than the same wheel built with a Boost 148mm hub. Interestingly, the Super Boost Plus rear wheel and a standard Boost front wheel wind up being very similar in overall stiffness. What this means for the downhill rider is that you get more stiffness and predictability out of a 29er DH wheel and the most durable wheelset possible.

The Phoenix 29 is designed to be used with Super Boost Plus specific cranks with a 56-57mm chainline.  Traditional DH cranks also feature a 56-57mm chainline, so most common DH cranks can also be used with spacers on the spindle to take up the 15mm difference (7.5mm’s on each side of the BB) between a 107mm and 92mm BB shell.   

The Phoenix 29 uses standard ISCG-05 tabs.  However, with a Super Boost Plus specific crank, the chainring is closer to the crankarms which may create some clearance issues with certain brands of chainguides.  The Phoenix 29 comes equipped with a Pivot sourced custom Phoenix chainguide.  MRP G4 chainguides also fit. 

The Phoenix 29 uses a 157mm rear hub spacing. The rear hub spacing is the standard DH 157mm spacing available from every hub manufacturer in the world so any 157mm X 12mm hub is compatible.  with the Phoenix 29 complete builds, we use a configuration called Super Boost Plus 157. Super Boost Plus 157 builds on the idea of wider flange spacing pioneered by Boost 148. Super Boost Plus spreads the flanges even wider (up to 14mm wider than a 142mm hub) and increases wheel stiffness substantially, which is a huge benefit on 29” enduro and DH wheels. The special Super Boost Plus versions developed with Pivot, DT Swiss, Industry 9, Reynolds, and Hayes makes for a highly optimized DH wheel combination that takes wheel performance to another level. SRAM also offers a similar concept 157mm hub in its standard XO line. Super Boost Plus Hub flange spacing is also available on wheels from Stan’s and hubs from Onyx. Most hub companies are adopting the Super Boost wider flange spacing to their 157mm hubs so if you have a particular brand of hub that you are looking at, its best to check with the manufacturer as to what they are running.

You can but the Phoenix 29 does NOT feature internal dropper post routing so you will need to run a dropper with external actuation and get creative with cable routing if you want to go this way.

No, you can not put anything other than 29” wheels on the Phoenix 29.

You can fit any 29” x 2.6” tires on the market.

No rear brake adapter is needed for a 180mm rotor. If you would like to put a 203mm rotor on, you will need a 160mm to 180mm direct mount/post to post adapter.

Variables in frame size, discrepancies in scale calibrations, and method of weighing (with or without pedals and such) all lead to inaccurate comparisons, so we choose not to publish our bike weights. Pivot bicycles are among the lightest available, but the weight is only one of many factors that make a great bicycle. Other aspects such as frame stiffness, strength, durability, and ride quality are just as important as weight to our engineers when designing our Hollow Core Carbon and aluminum frames. Instead of comparing grams online, we suggest you visit your local Pivot dealer and see our attention to detail, smart, high-value spec, and class-leading features. Bring a scale if you’d like, but take just one demo ride and you’ll feel why Pivot Cycles are the most well-rounded, highest performing bicycles on the market and in many cases, yes, it’s the lightest as well.
